It’s like in playwrighting. Sometimes it’s necessary to just let voices run amock and not worry about whether or not you can “hear” what’s happening. Don’t be oppressed by the prodigy anecdotes in which music is “heard” and simply transcribed. Accounts of Webern’s process can be quite refreshing in these situations (and he was no musical slouch). Structure doesn’t always have to be “heard” to be good composition.
It’s like someone said, at least I have a better idea of what doesn’t work.
